Maori culture and history are distinctive and firmly ingrained in the identity of New Zealand. Along with English and New Zealand Sign Language, Te Reo Maori is one of its own languages and is recognized as an official tongue in New Zealand. The haka, a traditional dance, and powhiri, a welcoming ceremony, are only two examples of the many Maori traditions and practises that are still followed today.
